Gabu

by.Carlos Angeles

The battering restlessness of the sea

Insists a tidal fury upon the beach

At Gabu, and its pure consistency

Havocs the wasteland hard within its reach.

Brutal the daylong bashing of its heart

Against the seascape where, for miles around,

Farther than sight itself, the rock-stones part

And drop into the elemental wound.

The waste of centuries is grey and dead

And neutral where the sea has beached its brine,

Where the split salt of its heart lies spread

Among the dark habiliments of time.

The vital splendor misses.  For here

At Gabu where the ageless tide recurs

All things forfeited are most loved and dear.

It is the sea pursues a habit of shores.

ANALYSIS

A.     Literary Genre

In this part you have to:

1.The definition of the poem is type of literature based on the interplay of words and rhythm but in Gabu’s poem there is no rhythm.

2.The structure of the poem is a quaternit is 16 lines with 4 stanza, there  are no rules for rhyming.

A.     Analysis Guides

Here in the analysis guides we can see the contents of our analysis just like the Reader Response, Tone,Point of View, Diction and Style, Images and Symbols, Sound Effects and Theme.

Reader Response

When I read the poem at first I don’t  understand what this means but when I see the explanation and the notes I understand its meaning . SO when I read the poem it makes  me  want to continue in life because this poem says that no matter  how hard life can be just continue , how many problems you will face you had to face it and goes on with life.

Tone

Carlos Angeles, seemed to be serious writing the poem. He might be in a very silent place overlooking the feature of the sea. The poet studied and observe the sea and through experience he wanted the people understand how they handle the situation. He also wanted to take care of the people who wanted to approach the sea.

Point of View

The point of view in this poem was "third person point of view" because the author was talking to the people living in Gabu not to himself. Also, he didn't include himself while he was explaining the poem he wrote. By the third point of view describing that the poet write in Gabu not him.He explains to the third person that he is telling the poem that he is not included.

Diction and Style

Diction and style can be defined as a style of speaking or writing determined by the choice of words by a speaker or a writer. In the poem it is necessary that the choice of words should be such that the listener or reader understand easily but from the poem it can be included in formal diction because the author wrote the poem in formal manner because he used unfamiliar words and different deep words having deep meanings. Examples of the deep words is tidal fury means is high sea waves that is triggered by an earthquake, havocs means wide and general destruction or devastation, forfeited  means lose or give up (something) as a necessary consequence of something else.

Images and Symbols

The poem starts off on the first stanza with a general attitude towards describing the devastations brought about by the “battering restlessness of the sea”. The sea, as we know it, is a common imagery of life. However, it is represented as something that “insists a tidal fury upon the beach”. Words such as “sea”, and “beach”, denote life, and happiness, and a general tone of positivity. When one thinks of the sea, and the beach, normally, it is accompanied by thoughts about the beautiful sunset, while we’re peacefully reading a book or drinking wine with a loved one, having meaningful conversations that give us some time off from the cruel realities of life.

Sound Effects

The poem of Gabu is a free verse because there is no rhyming words,no rhythm, northymicpatterns.

Theme

Life can be restless like the sea; temporal, but desires permanence. Life does notlast long but no matter what happens we need to be stable. It’s just like the Gabu that even if the typhoon passes by, even he destroys all the houses and buildings, we still need you to get up and start a new phase of life.

B.     Contextual Analysis

Regional Context

In the gabu, the author  Carlos Angeles, says that he did not experience life in Gabu because Ilocos Norte is far from Tacloban where he was born. It is said that he only wrote the poem because he wanted to let us know what is happening in Gabuwhen a strong storms hit. After Researching it was been learned that he was actually born in Tacloban City (Region VIII) .

SUMMARY

The poem really touches our heart, it reminds us that life is not always fair, sometimes down, sometimes up, like waves in the sea it goes up and goes down. We appreciate more things that are less appreciated. In Gabu, the author is talking the persona used by the author is probably a resident in Gabu. The poem want us to know what would you feel when you encounter that kind of scenario. In this poem it describes how the place looks like and the like in every single detail of the poem the persona told how the storm prolong and how it ruined the place. From the title itself we can picture that the setting of the poem is near the beach. The lament of the persona motivates him to tell the circumstances during the storm. It contains a very strong emotion. It talks about life sadness, suffering and the state of people living in that place, sea represents life, waves represents the state of our lives, storm represents our problem which is not permanently there but continuous to give us strength in every problems in our life..
